Cylindrical lens
Cylindrical lens is made of a section of cylindrical glass and consists of a cylinder and a plane, including plano-concave and plano-convex lenses.

Cylindrical lens is based on its cylindrical curvature. When light passes through a cylindrical lens, it is refracted or focused along one axis (the cylinder axis) while remaining unchanged in the perpendicular axis. This asymmetric focusing property allows cylindrical lenses to alter the shape of light beams, such as converging or diverging them along one direction while maintaining their original shape in the other direction.
Types of Cylindrial Lenses
Single Cylindrial Lenses
Double Cylindrial Lenses
Triple Cylindrial Lenses
Aspheric cylindrial lenses have an irregular shape.
| Type of Cylindrical Lens | Characteristics | Common Applications |
| Single Cylindrical Lens | One cylindrical surface. | Laser line generation, correcting astigmatism. |
| Double Cylindrical Lens | Two cylindrical surfaces. | Generating laser sheets, circularizing elliptical beams, optical coherence tomography. |
| Triple Cylindrical Lens | Three cylindrical surfaces. | Advanced imaging systems requiring high precision. |
| Aspheric Cylindrical Lens | Irregular shape to correct aberrations. | High-precision optical systems, correcting spherical and chromatic aberrations. |
| Crossed Cylindrical Lens | Cylindrical cross structure. | Subjective refraction in ophthalmology. |
| Lenticular Lens | Used to create 3D effects in displays. | 3D display technology. |
Applications
Beam Shaping: Cylindrical lenses are commonly used in laser systems and optical setups for reshaping or reshaping laser beams, such as converting circular beams into lines or altering the aspect ratio of the beam profile.
Anamorphic Compression: Cylindrical lenses are utilized in anamorphic optical systems to compress or expand images along one axis while leaving the other axis unchanged, as seen in anamorphic lenses for cinema projectors.
Barcode Scanning: Cylindrical lenses are employed in barcode scanning systems to create a thin line of light for reading barcodes, improving scanning accuracy and speed.
Astigmatism Correction: Cylindrical lenses are used in eyeglasses and vision correction devices to correct astigmatism, a common refractive error that affects the curvature of the eye’s lens.
Microscopy: Cylindrical lenses find applications in microscopy and imaging systems for shaping and focusing light beams onto samples or specimens with high precision and control.
